			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Articles relating to the difficulties companies are experiencing when attempting to hire experienced staff are popping up in national publications such as The Wall Street Journal with increasing frequency.  In the professional employment/white collar ranks unemployment nationally is close to the low rate of 4%.  Four percent unemployment means there is virtually no unemployment.  The normal comings and goings of companies in the healthiest economy will cause close to 4% of the working populations to be between jobs.</p>
<p>Many sectors simply cannot find the talent they need to cover increasing demand and growth.  Manufacturing has open positions in the hundreds of thousands.  Banking and finance have come back with a vengeance and has open positions also in the hundreds of thousands.  Consumer spending continues to stoke the economy with retailers alone showing over half a million open positions.  The health care industry is almost at a crisis state when it comes to staffing.  Health Care has open positions in the millions with nursing alone showing over half a million open positions.</p>
<p>Help wanted signs, that largely disappeared over the past 2 years can be seen outside of many storefronts and businesses.</p>
<p>The economy is definitely back.  Unemployment is dropping monthly while positions remain open longer and longer.</p>
<p>Beyond the expanding economy, strong dollar, and low interest rates, lie 2 factors that will cause this cycle’s War For Talent to become downright vicious.  The Baby Boomers are finally retiring and will continue to remove their talents out of the job market for the next 10 years.  The second factor is the lost college and high school graduates of the past 3 years.  The 2 to 3 year experienced professional barely exists.  From 2008 to present the money to train and ability to bring on rookies simply did not exist.  And now we will all pay for that with a lack of 2 to 3 year experienced candidates.</p>
<p>So what’s a company to do?  Here are some simple ideas that will help—for the time being:</p>
<ul>
<li>Make your company and opportunity appealing</li>
<li>Sell your opportunity to the candidates you do uncover</li>
<li>Become flexible on background requirements, paying more attention to the quality of the person then the exact experience fit</li>
<li>When you find someone who you think is a good fit, hire them.  Do not delay in your decision.  While you delay, another company will not.</li>

<p>In a recent <a href="http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=121491038">story on “Morning Edition</a>,” Kurt Nickisch reported on companies that are thriving despite economic downturns.  His story focused on how any company, even a small business, can find opportunity in a recession.  One of the consultants he interviewed, Darrell Rigby, said he compares these situations to race cars speeding around a race track, where recessions are the curves:</p>
<blockquote><p><em>Rigby says it&#8217;s hard for companies to pass each other during good times on the straightaway. The big companies stay in front on power alone. ‘But on a curve, curves are driven by strategic finesse and so even a company that has less power — if it is skillfully maneuvered in curves — can pass much larger, stronger competitor. . .’</em><strong>.</strong></p></blockquote>
<p>Our economy is still somewhere on that curve, but it certainly won’t stay there for long.  For a company to pull ahead of its competitors, it will need to begin making those skillful maneuvers before its opportunity for advantage has passed.   There are a limited number of areas where true competitive advantages can be found for businesses.  Two of these avenues are through Technology and People. </p>
<p>Therefore, the questions we must ask ourselves are:  Are we employing the right technology, and are we working with the right people?  New technology can take a great deal of time to implement, but working with the right people is something that you can control and change on a much shorter timeline.  As evidenced by a recent report, the Aberdeen Group found that 60% of organizations are turning to contract staffing as a means to get the right people onboard in a much shorter timeframe – in many cases days, versus weeks or months.   Additionally, using contract staffing firms, as compared to “1099” independent contractors, drove an 88% higher rate of compliance to federal, regulatory and state labor policies. </p>
<p>Contract staffing has distinguished itself as a tool that strategic companies can employ in order to better position themselves and power ahead of their competitors before we are back on the straightaway.</p>
